Brexit – what does it mean for potential exporters?

There have been significant changes since the UK withdrew from the EU on January 1st 2021. For example, changes can be seen in relation to trade in food, animal products and by-products. Although we feared the worst about the many changes, Danish exports still travel across the North Sea and have actually increased since Brexit.

However, Brexit still entails some changes for Danish companies – and especially for food companies.

Here are some points to pay attention to:

  • In order to export to the UK, you must now register as an exporter of food products with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.
  • Certain products such as animal products, animal source foods and live animals must be checked at the border.
  •  In addition, fish must be accompanied by IUU catch certificates and storage documents.
  • Live animals and breeding stock must be accompanied by health certificates when sent to the UK.
  • Last but not least, all exports must be notified in advance to the British authorities.

Many of the new rules mentioned above were created in connection with the new model for border control – called The Border Target Operating Model (BTOM). It was established in 2023 and will be implemented in several phases.

It is essential to be aware of these phases, which we have organised in the timeline below.
