The Liveable City - Birmingham 2017

Seminars on masterplanning, smart city, district heating, transport and trust made up the 6th Liveable City conference that centred on the growth of the West Midlands.

Denmark is well known for developing technologically innovative and environmentally sound solutions to contemporary problems in cityscapes. With the Liveable City conference, we are able to share this knowledge through a range of seminars that furthers the dialogue on how to make our cities healthier and more liveable for all.

Almost 400 people signed up for the five seminars during the conference as well as a reception at Ramboll’s new office in Birmingham. In total, 36 speakers and chairs at the forefront of their areas of expertise presented during the 2-day conference. They turned this edition of the Liveable City conference into an inspirational event for all with an interest in creating sustainable and thriving communities.

The seminars all centred on liveability, but had a very broad scope, e.g the seminar Masterplanning and Housing discussed what to focus on in terms of policies, economic solutions and investments in order to put people first in city development. The conference also included seminars on district heating and the Danish energy model as well as how trust is foundational for Denmark, also in its architecture. Finally, there were seminars on how smart cities can improve our lives on a major scale, and how to make transport both healthier and easier for residents.

In all seminars, Danish companies – among others Ramboll, Mutopia, CF Møller, Urban Power, Danfoss, and The Alexandra Institute – presented tangible solutions to contemporary problems in cityscapes. Representatives from Aarhus and Copenhagen municipality were also present as well as representatives from Birmingham City Council and West Midlands Combined Authority, and they all helped to further the discussion and strengthen its outcome. They made the conference a very fruitful public-private dialogue in the context of British-Danish cooperation.
