New Danish Drama. Twenty-two playwrights

Following the success of television series such as The Killing and Borgen, Danish drama has gained a prominent position on television and cinema screens. With support from the Danish Arts Foundation, the Danish Arts Agency and the Danish Playwrights' and Screenwriters' Guild, the Embassy of Denmark in London has published a portfolio which aims at introducing British theatre professionals to contemporary Danish stage plays.

New Danish Drama. Twenty-two playwrights presents a selection of prominent Danish playwrights and their work. The portfolio is written and edited by dramaturg Jesper Bergmann, who has worked for the Royal Danish Theatre and the Danish Broadcasting Corporation.

"Artistically, those selected range widely, embracing many styles, genres and themes. The family is a central arena, and issues relating to gender, love and identity often put in an appearance," Jesper Bergmann writes in the preface.

The playwrights are presented by short biographies and summaries of selected plays. The portfolio is beautifully illustrated with stage photos as well as portraits by the photographer Klaus Holsting. The portfolio is published in print as well as online, making it accessible to anyone who takes an interest in promoting Danish writing for theatre to an international audience.

New Danish Drama. Twenty-two playwrights was presented on Friday 18 September 2015 at the New Nordic Drama seminar at the Free Word Centre in London. The event was a collaboration between the Free Word Centre and the Nordic Embassies. On 16 October the portfolio became available at Theatre Café Denmark's readings at the Danish Embassy. The event focused on plays for a youth audience and was supported by the Danish Arts Foundation and Arts Council of England.

New Danish Drama. Twenty-two playwrights is published by the Embassy of Denmark with support from the Danish Arts Foundation Committee for Literature, the Danish Arts Foundation Committee for Performing Arts, the Danish Arts Agency and the Danish Playwrights' and Screenwriters' Guild.
