From 'The Dream of Somewhere' by Christian Brems

Christian R. Brems (born 1989) studies BA (Hons) Fine Art Photography at Camberwell College of Arts in London. He won the Danish Embassy Art Prize in 2012 for his photography project 'The Fundamentals of Fishing'.

PandIS (Photography & Illustration Services, University of Cambridge) has now invited Christian R. Brems to exhibit at the University of Cambridge. His exhibition ‘The Dream of Somewhere’ opens at the PANDIS building in Cambridge on 23 April, and will be shown for two months.

Christian R. Brems says: ‘The exhibition The Dream of Somewhere explores how our freedom to travel and migrate across the world affects us as individuals. Both are becoming increasingly easier in the connected global world we live in. I believe the emotional response to the changes and constant mobility is highly dependent on individual experience. The added freedom changes the dynamics in our relation to people and places, creating new meanings for ideas such as home.

On these journeys, I have experienced that memories from the past can become dreams of the future, and dreams become memories.

In the exhibition, I use photography that is hardly site-specific in its content and text that isn't based on actual experiences but on abstractions of these experiences, creating room for the viewer to project their own thoughts and feelings into the work. Where some see loneliness, others will see freedom.’
