In October 2015 the Southbank Centre, London was selected as the winner to host the prestigious Nordic Cultural Festival during 2017. Nordic Matters will weave through regular programmes at the Southbank Centre and feature a host of performances, concerts, readings, as well as showcasing architecture, crafts, design and gastronomy. There will be seminars and talks with key cultural and artistic figures from across the Nordic countries throughout the coming year.

The programme of events is aimed at transforming how the UK, and the international visitors to the Southbank Centre, perceive the Nordic countries. This unique opportunity has been made possible through the support of the Nordic Council of Ministers and funding for the arts in the individual Nordic countries.

You can be a part of this international event as it launches this weekend, by participating in a Learning Through Play workshop hosted by the LEGO team, hearing about Nordic mythology by Icelandic writer and poet Sjón and getting advice on sustainable food preservation from Nordic chefs.

You will also get insights into Nordic ways of living at talks and debates throughout the weekend when experts reveal the secrets behind the successes of the Nordic countries. Amongst other things, they will discuss the importance of play, gender equality and approaches to living a more sustainable lifestyle.

In addition, you can see works of art by Jesper Just, Henna-Riika Halonen and Ingrid Torvund, and find the foyers of the Royal Festival Hall transformed by the Sami artist Outi Pieski.

As the theme of the festival states, ’Nordic Matters’.
