The Whitstabel Literary Festival takes place from 8-19 May. Sunday 12 May at 11.45 am, the new Whitstabel based independent publisher Nordisk Books who focuses on contemporary Scandinavian literature will have a talk called New Scandinavian Voices highlighting the author Maria Gerhardt, showing the UK that there is more to Nordic literature than crime novels.

The late Danish author Maria Gerhardt who died of cancer in 2017 wrote the acclaimed Transfer Window, which reimagines the wealthy suburbs of North Copenhagen as a giant hospice for the terminally ill. Everyone wears white. New-age nuns grow organic cannabis on the beach, and music is forbidden. In amongst it all come the crushing memories of life as a terminal cancer patient, while Gerhardt’s narrator and her friend Mikkel hang out, talk about the 80s and about which way they would prefer to die.

Gerhardt will be represented at the talk by Pernille Wass, who was her editor. The Norwegian author Henrik Nor-Hansen is also a part of the talk. He is the Nordic Council's Literature Prize nominated author of Termin exploring the human condition through a distant and unusual stylistic voice.

If you fancy a late spring Sunday afternoon packed full of literarture by the seaside, check out WhitLIt. Entry is £6.00.
